Speaker Announcement – Joe Incandela
July 28, 2012 Blog Michael Metcalf
After months of planning and preparation, we’re finally ready to make our first announcement regarding our speaker line-up for TEDxSalford 2.0!
Joe Incandela is a professor of physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He’s also the latest spokesperson for the CMS experiment at CERN, the research facility in Geneva, Switzerland, which hosts the Large Hadron Collider. This is the world’s largest, highest-energy particle accelerator, and was in the news recently for its involvement in the reported discovery of the Higgs Boson, which I covered briefly a few weeks ago.
Joe has been based at the facility since 2007, and sees physics as comparable to art. He studied painting and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, intending to make a career in glass sculpture, and became interested in physics while studying chemistry so he could better understand his craft.
“Art can produce contributions to our culture that will last the ages and so can particle physics. We’re creating and finding out new things, and we believe that what we find will be an enduring part of our culture and history.” – Joe Incandela
It’s an honour to have Joe speak at TEDxSalford, and we look forward to hearing his insights from the world of particle physics.
TEDxSalford 2.0 will be hosted at the Lowry Complex, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, on 21st October 2012.
